Commons at Work | Looking ahead to HLPF 2018

Invitation to our upcoming strategy meeting on Jan 6th; to provide ideas for the Commons Cluster programme for 2018 and the Global Pact on the Environment

We invite our friends and colleagues to attend the January 6 – Commons Cluster Strategy Meeting:

  1. To submit your ideas on what you would like us to focus on in 2018 and beyond , including the Global Pact for the Environment that has just been introduced to the UN General Assembly by France;

  2. To attend the Nature Communications workshop led by Dr. Maia Kincaid;

  3. To help create an exhibit at UN Headquarters that will help bring your concerns to the attention of thousands of visitors to the UN in July, 2018.

Our next strategy meeting will be held from noon to 1:00 pm on Saturday, Jan 6, 2018 EDT. (9-10 a.m. PDT; and 6-7 p.m. CET). Call in number: +1 641 552 9450Access Code: 337883#

We shall focus on shaping our programme for 2018 and beyond, including our activities at the upcoming High Level Political Forum (HLPF) that wlll be held from July 9-18 in 2018 and focus on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):

  • Goal 6. Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all

  • Goal 7. Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all

  • Goal 11. Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable

  • Goal 12. Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns

  • Goal 15. Protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, and halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss

  • Goal 17. Strengthen the means of implementation and revitalize the Global Partnership for Sustainable Development

Although these SDGs centre on public goods, rooted in Naturewater, sanitation and energy–and commons goods-terrestrial ecosystems, forests, deserts and biodiversity–, no mention is made of Nature or the Environment in the human-centred 2018 theme itself which is: Transformation toward sustainable and resilient societies. We shall discus the approaches the Commons can most usefully take to help correct this imbalance.

Janice Cox and Jessica Bridgers of World Animal Net (WAN) will introduce an exciting and promising new project: the Global Pact on the Environment as one of our new focus points. This presents many possibilities at this early stage for those with a commons and/or Nature focus. The Global Pact on the Environment was first extensively discussed at a Summit organized by France at the outset of the General Assembly and is just now being formulated as a resolution to be voted on this year. You can read more about this topic at: www.piratepad.net/pactfortheenvironment

To prepare for the upcoming strategy meeting and make the most of this opportunity for your own (organizations’) work, please add your comments to this pirate pad. All ideas are welcome.

Our strategy meeting will, as usual, be preceded by a Nature Communications Workshop, led by Dr. Maia Kincaid. This will be held from 11:00 a.m.-noon on Saturday, January 6th, 2018 (8-9 a.m. PDT5-6:00 pm CET) Call in number +1 712 770 4010. Access Code 218 628#.
